How to Create An Effective Bedtime Routine

An effective bedtime routine doesnโ€™t have to be complicated. I like to keep things as simple as possible, and I’m sure you do to! The key is to be consistent!

Here are some simple steps to include:

  1. Set a Consistent Bedtime Choose a bedtime that allows your toddler to get the recommended amount of sleep for their age, and stick to it every night. Try to get them to bed and up at the same time each day give or take 30 minutes! Looking for guidance on how many hours your toddler should be sleeping? 2. Wind Down with Quiet Activities Engage in calming activities such as reading a book, listening to soft music, or doing a quiet puzzle. We love letting the kids listen to a short story on their YOTO player after we read them a story.
  3. Establish a Sequence of Events Create a predictable sequence of activities leading up to bedtime, such as bath time, brush teeth, put on pajamas, read a story, say prayers, etc.
  4. Create a Comfortable Sleep Environment Ensure your toddlerโ€™s sleep space is comfortable, with a cool temperature, dim lighting, and minimal noise. We keep the red light on the kids yoto player and we also use this small night light that plugs into an outlet! For noise, we play a playlist that I put together of soft music and lullabies on an Amazon Alexa.
  5. Limit Screen Time Avoid screens at least an hour before bedtime to reduce blue light exposure, which can interfere with sleep and melatonin levels. If my kids are using their fire tablets, I have them wear these blue light glasses for kids!

  1. Print the Nighttime Routine Chart PDF. Print it double sided, making sure both sides line up correctly. The back should be upside down so that the praise hands are right side up when the tab is folded up.
  2. Laminate the PDF. I love this laminator for home use! Laminating the routine chart will help it hold up with nightly use.
  3. Apply velcro sticky dots to each tab. These velcro tabs will be the perfect fit.
  4. Cut on the dotted lines between the words so the tab can be folded upward and secured when that task/routine is done.
  5. Keep this in their bedroom or add a magnetic strip and attach it to the fridge. I have my kids daily routines and chore charts in this hanging folder system and it works great!!
